The museums of Bilbao, gathered in one calm reference

Bilbao Museums Guide is a plain, independent index of the city's museums and galleries. We describe what each collection holds, how the buildings are arranged, when they tend to be open, and what a visitor can reasonably expect from a first walk through the rooms. Nothing here is sponsored, and nothing here is tied to any institution.

Why this portal exists

Most visitors arrive in Bilbao with two or three names in mind and a few hours to spare. The city rewards a little preparation, because its collections are spread between the riverbank, the old town and the newer civic quarter. This portal gathers the practical shape of each museum — its history, its strengths, its rhythm across the week — so that a visitor can decide where to spend a morning and where to spend an afternoon.

We write for people who like to understand a place before they walk into it. That means honest descriptions, not promotional ones. If a gallery is small, we say so. If a collection is strongest in one period, we say that too.

Institution by institution

Fourteen reference pages cover the major museums and gallery clusters of the city, from the great modern art museum on the river to the small exhibition rooms tucked into the old town.

Practical and plain

Opening rhythm, accessibility, family provision and transport are treated as first-class topics, because the experience of a museum begins well before the entrance.

Independent by design

This is an editorial project with no commercial relationship to any museum. We describe, we do not promote, and we correct errors when readers point them out.

What you will find here

Begin with the overview of Bilbao's museums, which maps the city's main collections and how they relate to one another geographically. From there, each dedicated page takes one institution and describes it in depth: the Guggenheim and its riverside setting, the Museum of Fine Arts and its older holdings, the archaeological collection, the maritime museum by the estuary, the Basque museum in the old town, and the multipurpose Azkuna Zentroa.

Around those core pages sit the practical guides: opening hours and days with no-charge entry, the accessibility guide, family and education notes, and getting around the city between visits. A short contact page lets you send a correction or a question to the editorial desk.

A note on accuracy

Museums change. A room closes for conservation, a wing reopens after refurbishment, a schedule shifts with the season. We review our pages regularly, but we always recommend checking a museum's own notice board or website before a long journey. The value of a reference portal is orientation, not certainty, and we would rather tell you that plainly than pretend otherwise.
